Malibu Mushroomery

Have you ever stumbled onto information that changed your life forever? In 2019 my husband David and I discovered our love for growing mushrooms. Over our 10+ year marriage we have had many failed, and even some almost successful (until you factor in the costs) attempts at a home garden. We would always grow the usual tomatoes, okra, peppers and maybe some squash. When we began our mycology journey at home (in a shoe box!) we very quickly learned that the satisfaction of growing mushrooms was so much more gratifying to us than fighting predators in our outdoor garden. With that spark, came endless curiosity and an overwhelming desire to spread spores to kitchens all over the country.

When our love of mushrooms outgrew our shoe box we started trying to source gourmet mushrooms close to our house. Unfortunately, the only luck we had (aside from portobello and buttons) was at farmers markets. With 2 kids in tow, making it to the farmers market was not always a possibility for us Saturday mornings.

So how do people get access to these potentially life altering, extremely beneficial & nutrient dense power houses? Grow them at home? As much as we love to, not everyone has the patience or time for that! Go to the farmers market? Sure! there's probably a mushroom person at your local market. If you're like us, this is a time commitment you can't make every weekend due to, well.. life.

So what were we supposed to do with all of the information we learned? We felt like we had discovered the fountain of youth but had no good way of getting the elixir! So we expanded our shoe box to a small greenhouse. That's when the real fun started!

After spending time growing and sharing the fruits of our labor with friends and family we decided that we had an obligation to expand our growing area again! We decided to create Malibu Mushroomery as a way to offer the endless benefits of eating mushrooms daily to anyone that wants it.

We live in Sunny LA where we grow and ship our subscription Mushroom Boxes from. David immigrated from South Africa to Texas in 2000. He has been working in healthcare for almost 20 years and is a Nurse by day. Natalia is a Brazilian that grew up in Texas and went to school to be a Chef. Her family in Brazil has a long history of farming and many family members still operate working farms today. Natalia has been managing and operating farms in California since they moved from Texas in 2017. We hope you get the chance to enjoy our Mushrooms soon!
